The Ohel Joseph Synagogue

Jerusalem, Israel, 1975-77

It is a part of the Ramot Housing Complex the construction of which completed a few years before, and should serve some of its residents. The synagogue provides 250 seats for men in the main hall and about 70 seats for women in the gallery above. It also includes two classrooms and a kindergarten on the ground floor.

Of special interest is the way the interior is illuminated by indirect light, introduced through three towers in the corners of the building. By the contrast between the bright and dark areas of the ceiling, a reflected image of the Star of David is created. On the outside, the Synagogue looks like a solid rock, a kind of black Kaba Stone.
